Dietary Info

We make our meals vegan and vegetarian so they are accessible to people with dietary restrictions. For that reason, we are a nut-free kitchen, and strive to make our meals gluten free whenever possible!

We ask that you bring a container and utensils for yourself, to help us reduce single use materials. If you forget, we sell compostable bowls on site during meal services for $0.25 (cash only).

About us

The Hive Free Breakfast & Lunch program is a subsidiary of the Hive Cafes. We offer a vital service to students, staff, and community members at Loyola campus—a designated food desert with limited access to grocery stores or affordable dining options. More than just a meal, HFBL helps build community through food, creating a welcoming space where people can eat, connect, and learn cooking skills together. The program is committed to serving nutritious, high-quality food while being mindful of the social and environmental impacts of what we consume.

Allergies

The Hive Free Breakfast & Lunch is not an allergen-free kitchen. While we try to keep a close eye on potential allergens, when we state that a particular meal is wheat-, peanut-, nut-, or dairy-free, it means we did not actively use those ingredients, and we tried to keep these ingredients as far away as possible from the meal.

If you have an allergy please speak with the cooks or volunteers that helped prepare the meal.

Location

Located in the Hive Cafe Loyola, on the second floor of the SC building next to the library | SC200 building, at 7141 Sherbrooke West.

We are pleased to offer: a dining/study space, a community fridge, a free grocery pantry, microwaves, gender neutral bathrooms, a zen area, and more!

Volunteer with Us

Interested in volunteering? Email us or drop in any weekday between 8am-2:30pm! Minimum of 15 minutes required.

Funding

The HFBL is able to provide these meals and services thanks to the ASFA fee levy, Concordia Student Union funding, and generous donations from Moisson Montreal.

If you would like to donate to our meal program, you can do so here!

Space Rentals

The Hive Free Breakfast & Lunch space and kithen can be rented for events of any kind and size. See the space booking page for more information.

Food Assistance

The HFBL Triannual Free Grocery Program began in 2021 as a response to rising food costs, with the goal of supporting students during school breaks—times when campus food services are closed and food insecurity spikes. Originally held once a year, the program has since expanded to three distributions annually—during fall, winter, and spring breaks—to better meet the needs of Concordia students living in and around the Loyola campus food desert.
